Jean Drapeau (1916–1999) was far more than a politician — he was the visionary architect of modern Montreal. Serving as mayor for nearly three decades (1954–1957, 1960–1986), Drapeau spearheaded the dramatic transformation of Montreal from a regional hub into a celebrated international cultural metropolis.

Under his dynamic leadership, Montreal captured the world’s imagination through two monumental historic milestones: Expo 67 — widely regarded as the most successful World’s Fair of the 20th century — and the 1976 Summer Olympic Games. His grand civic ambition also gave birth to the Montreal Metro, the iconic Place des Arts performing arts complex, and a massive revitalization of the city's infrastructure.
