Pochoir ist ein französisches Wort, das "Schablone" bedeutet und eine Druckmethode beschreibt, die Schablonen verwendet. Es ist auch bekannt als Handkolorierung oder Handillustration. Pochoir ist eine verfeinerte Technik zur Herstellung von limitierten Auflagen von Schablonendrucken.
Pochoir war in Europa, insbesondere in Frankreich, um die Jahrhundertwende beliebt und am populärsten von Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts bis in die 1930er Jahre, mit einem Zentrum der Aktivität in Paris. In den 1920er und 30er Jahren, während der Art Deco-Ära, erneuerten die Franzosen den Farbauftragprozess der Schablone und brachten die Farbillustrationsprozesse für Bücher und Drucke zu neuen Höhen.
Pochoir ist eine sehr arbeitsintensive und teure Technik, die ein Bild erzeugt, das oft nicht von dem handgemalten Original des Künstlers zu unterscheiden ist.
