Gerhard Richter – Seestück (Bewölkt), 1969 is a limited edition print of 200 copies. It is a picture of longing in which the sea and the sky seem to blur. This work is one of Richter`s first landscape paintings and, like all of his representational paintings since 1962, is based on a photographic model.
In contrast to Photorealism, Richter`s interest is not in the medium of photography itself, but only in some of its merits. It facilitates the painter`s sought-after non-commitment to his subject and enables him to reproduce his subject authentically without modifying it with his personal handwriting. Richter`s real subject is painting as such. He demonstrates its detachment from the object by means of photography directly on the object itself.
